A beautiful and intuitive interface isn't a luxury, it's a necessity. The Legacy Manager interface work began way back in 2023 when the original plan was to launch the game as a multiplayer online game. I'll go over why it later changed direction and become a full desktop app in another post, but for now I thought it would be interesting for you to see how the UI has progressed through the last few years, and hear some of the reasoning behind it.
When Legacy Manager was a web based game that was getting close to being playable, I hired a designer to put together some designs for me. He had a history of posting re-design concepts on various design websites, and had done a few based on ideas he had for improving the UI in games like Football Manager.
There were a few things I knew I wanted, but gave him quite a loot of flexibility outside those key areas. The thing I was most insisitant on was a simple, left-sided nav for accessing the main areas of the game with minimal clicks, dropdowns and expanding menus.
After a month or so of working together, here is what he delivered to me via Figma design files
First we have a number of generic controls and design concepts to be used throughout the pages. These formed the basis of everything that came later in page designs
Then we worked on delivering the first full page, starting with what I expected to be the most complex - the squad view.
This early UI still forms the basis of the app now, more than 2 years later. We have a fixed left menu allowing single-click access to the most commonly used areas of the game, simple back, forward and search controls at the top, sub-tabs for navigating within sections, and the quick-look calendar at the bottom.
Navigation was simple and always visible, the most important things to me in a game containing a lot of data and options.
I was always keen to make the game feel like the older management games I'd played as a kid. Games that were easy to pick up and play, and that allowed you to play a season or two in an evening.
For a while, I played with the idea of giving the UI a retro feel as well, and these pixel style versions made it in to the game for a while. They follow the same design as above, but with retro fonts and images.
You can see that the layout and logic of the whole thing is still the same, but fonts, image styles etc have become more block and a little more old-school.
This UI actually stayed in game for nearly a year while I focussed on other things, but as work continued I felt it was holding me back. I was limiting myself in what I could do design-wise, and I also quickly got tired of the look.
At this stage I had a bit of a re-think. What I'd set out to acheive was a game that felt like the games of old, Something that was quick and fun to play. How it was styled wasn't necessary to achieve that, and the style was actually becoming a distraction. A UI should stay out of the way, not fight for attention.
By this time the game was a fully desktop-only app, re-built in Rust for a fast and modern game. For the technical people out there, I'll go in to the re-write in Rust at a later date.
During the re-write I reverted back to something closer to the original designs, but with one major change.
Everything felt a bit same-y. It didn't matter if you were looking at Man City in the Premier League, or Eastleigh in the National League, all clubs looked and felt the same.
The introduction of club colours to team and player profiles was a first step towards making the game feel a bit more alive.
This was also the first step towards bringing club shirts in to the game.
Again you can see the same basic structure to the pages, but with a cleaner look and with colours implemented and a move to more graphical style content to give quick overviews of things such as player quality and ages.
Now that I was comfortable with the basic structure and the general look, I started experminting with backgrounds and styling of less critical things such as the tabs and buttons.
First, the top bar was extended to take up the full width of the pitch, tabs. were re-styled, and I tried a photo style background.
The photo backgrounds were quickly rejected as they caused all sorts of contrast issues, and licensing would have been impossible.
I switched to a solid background with a few colour contrasts to break it up and make things feel a little less "flat", and implemented final styling on buttons and text fields, seen here in the top bar.
The player profile I designed to give you a quick overview of a player, before letting you explore them in more detail. With the up/down buttons next to the player photo, you can quickly skip through your squad and see stand-out players at a glance.
I'm in the final stretch now, and don't foresee changes beyond minor polish before launch. The final UI is just a slight tweak on the above.
I've purposely uploaded the Man City club overview page again so that you can see the differences between the latest version and the first drats up in the "Back to the original style" section above.

I have a few changes to the continue button, settings button, and date display in progress, but this is pretty much finalised now.
To me, looking back on the changes all at once, it's nice to know that the original layout we settled on all that time ago has survived all the changes and remains easy to use. I've spent hundreds of hours in the UI and am more convinved than ever that the weeks we put in to our original concepts were worth every minute. While the first and last images look very different at a glance, the structure remains almost idential.

This policy explains what Funny Old Games ("we", "us", "our") does with information about you when you visit footballsupremo.com, buy Football Supremo, or play it. We are the data controller for that information.

Our online shop is run by Paddle.com, which sells the game as our reseller and Merchant of Record. Paddle takes your payment under its own privacy policy, and we never see or store your card details.
Paddle passes us what we need to fulfil your order: your email address, the country you bought from, what you bought, and the order reference. We use it to send you your licence key and download, to answer support enquiries, and to handle refunds. Our lawful basis is that we need it to perform our contract with you. We also keep a record of the sale because tax law requires us to.
When you activate Football Supremo, the game sends us your licence key and a device identifier, and it checks in from time to time to confirm the key is still valid. The device identifier is a one-way code calculated from an identifier your computer already holds; it is not your hardware serial number, and we cannot work backwards from it to your machine.
We use this to give you the game you paid for, to keep a key from being shared beyond the number of computers allowed, and to stop a key working after a refund or a reversed payment. Our lawful basis is performing our contract with you, together with our legitimate interest in preventing our game from being distributed without payment. This is necessary for the service you asked for, so it is not something you can switch off while using the game.
To see that the game is working as it should, and to work out what to improve, Football Supremo sends us statistics about how it is used. This is on by default, and you can switch it off at any time in the game's settings menu. If you switch it off, the game stops sending, and it keeps working exactly as before.
What is sent:
What is not sent: your name, your email address, your manager or save names, anything you have typed, your files, or your IP address. Our server records a one-way code made from your IP address to spot abuse of the endpoint, never the address itself.
We use these statistics only to check the game is behaving and to improve it, and we do not share them with anyone else except someone helping us make those improvements. We do not connect them to your order, your email address or your licence key, and we do not use them to build a profile of you, to target advertising, or to make any decision about you. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in keeping the game working properly and making it better, and the collection is permitted for statistical purposes under the rules on storage and access technologies.
This statistics system exists for the early access period. It is removed from the game entirely at the 1.0 release.
If you email us or reach us through social media, we keep your message, your address and anything else you choose to tell us, so we can answer you and handle any follow-up. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in responding to people who contact us, and performing our contract where the message is about an order.
Our web host records ordinary server logs, including the address your request came from, for security and to keep the site running. The website sets two cookies, one to keep your session and one to protect forms against cross-site request forgery. Both are needed for the site to work, so they do not require your consent.
We do not use advertising cookies, third-party analytics, tracking pixels or social media trackers on this website.
We share information only with the companies that help us run the business, and only with what they need:
We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for anyone else's marketing.
Some of these companies process information outside the United Kingdom. Where that happens, we rely on the UK's adequacy regulations for that country, or on the International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum to the Standard Contractual Clauses, so that your information keeps the same protection it has here. Email us if you would like a copy of the safeguards for a particular provider.
You have the right to ask us for a copy of the information we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to restrict what we do with it, to object to processing we carry out for our legitimate interests, and to receive it in a portable form. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time, and that does not affect anything done before you withdrew it.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first so we can put it right — you have a right to complain to us. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, or by calling 0303 123 1113.
Football Supremo can be played by people of any age, and we design for that: the game asks for no account, no name and no email address, we collect as little as we can, and nothing we collect is used for advertising or profiling. Where we rely on consent for anyone under 13, we need a parent or guardian to give it. If you are a parent and have a question about what your child's copy of the game sends us, please contact us.
Information is held on servers in the United Kingdom and Europe, reached over encrypted connections, with access limited to the people who need it. Identifiers that come from the game are one-way codes rather than the underlying values.
We update this policy when what we do changes, and we change the "Last updated" date at the top when we do. If a change matters to you — a new purpose, or a new company seeing your information — we will say so clearly rather than quietly editing the page.

These terms cover the footballsupremo.com website and the Football Supremo game ("the game"), both run by Funny Old Games ("we", "us", "our"). They form the agreement between us when you buy or use the game, so please read them. Nothing here takes away the rights the law gives you as a consumer.
Football Supremo is made and sold by Funny Old Games. The quickest way to reach us about anything — an order, a fault, a question about these terms — is help@footballsupremo.com.
Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com, which is the Merchant of Record for all our orders. Paddle takes your payment, sends your receipt, and handles order enquiries and returns, so your purchase is also covered by Paddle's own buyer terms. We make and support the game itself.
The price is worked out at checkout for the country you are in, in your own currency where possible and including any tax due where you live. You see the full amount before you pay. Your contract to buy is made when Paddle confirms your order.
Refunds are set out in our Refund Policy, which forms part of these terms.
When you buy Football Supremo we give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and play the game on computers you own or use, for your own private, non-commercial enjoyment. You do not own the software itself; we keep the copyright and everything else in it.
You may not sell, rent, sub-licence or give away the game or a licence key, publish copies of it, or pass off any part of it as your own. Nothing in these terms affects the rights the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 gives you to observe, study or decompile the software where that Act allows it.
Your purchase comes with a licence key. The key is yours alone: please do not share it. To keep keys from being passed around, a key can be used on a limited number of computers at a time, and you can free up a slot yourself when you change machine.
If a purchase is refunded, or a payment is reversed through a chargeback, the licence granted by that purchase ends and its key stops working. If you break these terms seriously — for example by selling or publishing your key — we may withdraw it. We will not withdraw a key for any other reason.
If we ever stop running the service that checks licence keys, we will release an update to the game that removes the need for it, so a copy you have paid for keeps working.
Football Supremo is in early access: it is playable, it is not finished, and it will change while we develop it. You are buying the game as it stands on the day you buy it, together with the updates we release afterwards.
We describe on this website what is in the game now and what we are working on. What we describe as planned is our intention rather than a commitment to a date, and plans can change. Where we have said something is already in the game, it should be there — if it is not, that is a fault, and section 7 applies.
We may update the game to fix problems, improve it and add to it. Updates are part of what you bought, and an update will not leave the game failing to match how we described it. Where an update is needed to keep the game working properly, please install it; if you choose not to, we are not responsible for problems the update would have fixed.
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the game must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. Satisfactory quality is judged against how the game was described, including that it is in early access, and against its price.
If the game is faulty, tell us at help@footballsupremo.com. You are entitled to have it repaired or replaced — for a game that usually means a fix or an update — within a reasonable time and without significant inconvenience to you. If that is not possible, or does not happen in a reasonable time, you are entitled to a price reduction, which can be up to the full price depending on how serious the fault is. These rights sit alongside our Refund Policy and are not limited by it.
If we fail to keep to these terms, we are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of that failure or of our failing to use reasonable care and skill. Loss or damage is foreseeable if it is obvious that it will happen, or if we both knew it might when you bought the game.
We do not exclude or limit our responsibility to you in any way where it would be unlawful to do so. That includes responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, and for your legal rights in relation to faulty digital content.
If defective digital content we have supplied damages a device or other digital content belonging to you, and this was caused by our failure to use reasonable care and skill, we will either repair the damage or pay you compensation.
We supply the game for private use. If you use it for any commercial purpose, we have no liability to you for loss of profit, loss of business, business interruption or loss of business opportunity.
If you send us ideas, bug reports or suggestions, you are giving us permission to use them in the game and in our other work, without owing you anything for it. You keep whatever rights you have in what you sent, and we will not claim you endorse the game.
Use the website lawfully. Do not attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of it, interfere with how it runs for other people, or use it to send anything unlawful or harmful.
We may change these terms for future purchases at any time, and the version published when you buy is the one that covers your purchase. We will only change the terms that apply to a purchase you have already made where we need to for legal, regulatory or security reasons, and we will tell you before we do. If such a change is to your disadvantage, you may end the agreement and, where you have not had the benefit of what you paid for, ask us for a refund of the part you have not used.
We may change, suspend or withdraw parts of the website, including for maintenance. This does not affect the game you have bought or your licence to play it.
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and proceedings may be brought in the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you may also bring proceedings in your own courts. If you live outside the United Kingdom, this choice of law does not take away any protection given to you by the law of the country you live in.

This policy explains when you can get a refund for Football Supremo bought from footballsupremo.com. It sits alongside our Terms of Service, and nothing in it affects your legal rights as a consumer. In short:
Football Supremo is made by Funny Old Games. Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com, which is the Merchant of Record for all our orders. Paddle takes your payment, sends your receipt, handles order enquiries and returns, and pays out refunds. We look after the game itself, your licence key and technical support.
If something is wrong with the game (it will not start, it crashes, or your licence key will not activate) email help@footballsupremo.com. Most problems can be fixed quickly, and we would much rather get you playing. Please tell us:
We may ask for more, such as a log file, so we can reproduce the problem. Asking us first is simply the quickest route. It does not take away any of your rights.
You can have a full refund, for any reason, if both of these are true:
To ask, email us, or request a refund from Paddle at paddle.net. We check playtime against our licence records. This refund is there so you can make sure the game runs on your PC and is for you. If you have already had a refund for Football Supremo, we may turn down a refund on a later purchase.
Once a refund has been made, the licence key for that order is deactivated and the game will no longer run with it.
Outside that window we do not give refunds for a change of mind, for example because you are no longer enjoying the game or have simply played enough of it. If the game is faulty, section 6 applies instead.
Football Supremo is in early access. It is not finished, it will change as we develop it, and you may run into bugs. You are buying the game as it stands on the day you buy it, together with the updates we release, so please check what is in it before you buy; the development blog covers what has landed and what is next. Waiting for a planned feature is not, on its own, grounds for a refund outside section 3.
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the game must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. What counts as satisfactory takes into account how the game was described, including that it is in early access, and its price.
If the game is faulty:
These rights do not depend on the 14-day or 2-hour limits in section 3, and nothing in this policy limits them.
UK law usually gives you 14 days to cancel something you buy online. For a download, that right ends once the download starts, as long as you agreed at checkout to get the game straight away, acknowledged that you would lose the right to cancel, and were sent confirmation of that. The refund in section 3 is available either way.
Refunds are paid by Paddle, back to the payment method you used unless you agree otherwise, with no fee. They are made within 14 days of the refund being agreed or, if you cancel under section 7, within 14 days of you telling us. Your bank may take a few more days to show it.
If you live outside the UK, you may have further rights under the law where you live. This policy does not take them away.
We may update this policy from time to time and will change the "Last updated" date when we do. Your purchase is covered by the version in place on the day you bought.

There is one price for the game, and it is worked out for the country you are in. Our orders are handled by our online reseller, Paddle.com, which prices the game in your own currency where it can and adds the tax due where you live, such as VAT, GST or sales tax.
You will always see the full price, including tax, before you pay, and that is the amount you are charged. If your bank converts the payment from another currency, it may add its own fee.
Early access is the cheapest Football Supremo will be. The price rises when the game leaves early access.
Football Supremo is in early access. It is out, it is playable, and it is not finished. Here is what that means before you spend anything.
Full 2D matches, transfers, team training, leagues and cups from England (5 levels), France and Spain (both 2 levels).
A 3D match view is in progress, and is included as an optional "work in progress" setting. You will need to turn it on in the in-game settings menu, as it is not yet in a release-ready state.
The price is shown in your own currency where we can manage it. Your exact total, including any tax due where you live, is confirmed at checkout before you pay anything. Payment is handled by our reseller, Paddle.com.
